Facts and practical information
Nestled in the heart of Vienna, the Imperial Crypt, also known as the Capuchin Crypt (Kapuzinergruft), offers a solemn yet fascinating window into the history of the Habsburg dynasty. As the principal place of burial for members of the House of Habsburg, the crypt serves as the final resting place for emperors, empresses, and other members of Austria's imperial family.
The Imperial Crypt is located beneath the Capuchin Church and has been in use since 1633. It currently houses the remains of 145 Habsburg royalty, including 12 emperors and 19 empresses. The crypt is renowned for the remarkable artistry of its sarcophagi, which range from simple stone containers to elaborate, baroque masterpieces adorned with sculptures and ornaments.
