Erzherzog-Johann-Hütte, National parks of Austria
Facts and practical information
The Erzherzog-Johann-Hütte is the only refuge of the Austrian Alpine Club and is located in the Glockner group at an altitude of 3454 m a.s.l. The building, opened in 1880 and extended several times, stands on the rocks of the Adlersruhe directly on the summit structure of the Großglockner.
Across the hut runs the border between the provinces of Carinthia and Tyrol.
This hut is the highest refuge in Austria. It is located on the normal route to the Großglockner and is accordingly well visited. In winter there is only a small emergency camp with four sleeping places available.
Since 2020, the refuge has been home to the highest fully automatic weather station in Austria, at 3465 meters above sea level. This also has great importance for the avalanche warning service Tyrol.
