Karmeliterplatz, Graz
Facts and practical information
Karmeliterplatz is a square in the first district of Graz, Innere Stadt, and was named after the former Carmelite monastery.
The square is located between Sporgasse, Hartigasse and Paulustorgasse. The Peacock Garden adjoins to the east. The Karmeliterplatz was laid out from 1578 by Archduke Charles II and was planned as the center of a city expansion. It is a large rectangular complex and has closed 17th century buildings on the north and south sides. Until the foundation of the Carmelite monastery in 1629 by Emperor Ferdinand II, the Carmelite Square was called the Square against the Castle. From 1938 to 1945 it was renamed Rudolf-Erlbacher-Platz.
At the edge of the square next to the approximately square fountain stands the Holy Trinity Column. This once had the main square at the entrance to Sackstraße as its location and had to be moved due to the expansion of the traffic network. In addition to the Karmeliterplatz and the Dreifaltigkeitssäule, the former Palais Galler is worth mentioning, which today houses the party headquarters of the Styrian People's Party. The Pfauengarten, which directly adjoins the Karmeliterplatz, is currently an event area with underground parking. The area is bordered by a remnant of the city wall. A corner turret can be seen at the entrance to the underground parking garage in Sauraugasse.
