Schloss Tabor
Facts and practical information
Tabor Castle in Neuhaus am Klausenbach is located in the three-country nature park Raab of the border region Austria, Hungary and Slovenia.
The castle with a hook-shaped ground plan was built in 1469 by the Styrian mercenary leader Ulrich Pessnitzer. Since 1607 it was owned by the Batthyánys and served as an alternative quarters for the dilapidated Neuhaus Castle. During the religious war from 1618 to 1648 the castle was a place of refuge for many Styrian Protestants. In the 17th century it was baroqueized. Later, Tabor Castle was the seat of the manorial administration and was eventually converted into a residence for the estate employees. Now the oldest building in the Jennersdorf district, it was permanently inhabited until 1964. The castle, which was still owned by the Batthyánys until 2019, was leased by the Rupprecht family. In 2002 and 2003 it was restored. Since August 2019, the castle has been owned by the Province of Burgenland.
The courtyard of the chateau with two-story arcades is used in the summer for the performance of an opera and for numerous other events. The round tower with heraldic cartouche is also worth seeing. Today the castle houses a wine tavern-restaurant.
