Facts About Pukllay
Pukllay, sometimes spelled "phukllay" is a vibrant traditional festival celebrated in the central Andes. The term "Pukllay" translates to "play" and evokes the whimsical movement of clouds or blossoms in the wind as the rainy season transitions into the harvest period.
In Bolivia, Pukllay is intertwined with the Christian carnival, commemorating a historic victory over the Spaniards. This is symbolically represented in the festival's ritual dance, which features Spanish helmets and spurs.
In March 2011, Bolivia made a significant step by proposing the Pukllay festival in Tarabuco, along with the Ayarichi dance of the Yampara people, for UNESCO World Heritage recognition. This nomination aimed to celebrate and preserve the festival's rich cultural and intangible heritage for future generations.
