Climate of Bosnia and Herzegovina
Due to the great diversity of its terrain, Bosnia and Herzegovina has several climatic zones. Most of its area is under the influence of a warm temperate climate, changing to a continental variety in the northeastern region. The south, including the coastal areas and the Neretva River valley, is dominated by a subtropical Mediterranean climate. In contrast, areas above 1,500 meters above sea level have a mountain climate, characterized by climatic stackedness.
Summers are usually warm and sunny. Air temperature in the warmest months ranges from 23°C - 28°C, with the further south one goes, the warmer it gets.
Winters are generally mild, with temperatures dropping to around 8°C - 13°C in the south and west of the country. The northern areas and around the numerous mountain ranges are the coldest areas of the country. In the winter months, temperatures here drop below 0°C, it is cold and windy, and it often snows.
Rainfall in Bosnia and Herzegovina is quite heavy and also depends on the location of each region. Average annual precipitation ranges from 600 mm in the lowlands, 850 mm in the mid-mountain basins, to 2000 mm in the Dinaric Mountains. In the eastern part of the Dinaric Mountains, rains increase in summer, while in the western part they increase in autumn and winter. In the lowlands, on the other hand, precipitation is evenly distributed throughout the year.
