Praça Doutor Maurício Cardoso, Porto Alegre
Facts and practical information
Doutor Maurício Cardoso Square is a square located in the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. It is located between Félix da Cunha and Tobias da Silva streets, in the Moinhos de Vento neighborhood.
The square was established with the subdivision of the Arraial de São Manoel, which opened on land owned by Maurícia Cândida da Fontoura Freitas and Fernando de Freitas Travassos, in 1878. It was then called Praça São Manoel, where, on February 24 of that year, the cornerstone of a chapel with the same name was laid. This chapel became the seat of a curato, but was transferred in 1917 to the São Pedro Church, on Cristóvão Colombo Avenue. The place had its name changed to the current one - a tribute to Maurício Cardoso - by Decree No. 34 of October 21, 1938.
Occupying an area of 6420 m², the square contains a water mirror, children's playground, monuments, benches, and ornamental vases in Marajoara style.
