Facts About Bar-tailed trogon
The bar-tailed trogon is a stunning bird belonging to the Trogonidae family, found across various African countries such as Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. These birds prefer to inhabit high-altitude forests, typically above 1,600 meters.
Measuring approximately 28 cm (11 inches) in length, the bar-tailed trogon is quite striking. It features a yellow bill and feet, and a long, broad tail that's black and white on the underside. The male is particularly distinctive with its blue-black head that has a bronze sheen, while the female has a brown head and a light cinnamon-colored throat and breast. Juvenile bar-tailed trogons resemble the females but have a white belly and pale spots on their wings.
Their vocalizations are as unique as their appearance. The bar-tailed trogon's calls include yelping crescendos and distinctive sounds like "yaow, yow, yow, yow…" and "wuk-wuk-wuk-wuk…". The female has her own characteristic call, a whining "chee-uu."
