Garter snake

Garter snakes, belonging to the genus Thamnophis, are small to medium-sized serpents native to North and Central America. They are widely distributed—from Canada to Costa Rica. Renowned for their adaptability, garter snakes thrive in various habitats, often favoring areas near water sources. Their diet is diverse, including amphibians, rodents, and fish.

These snakes exhibit fascinating behaviors, such as communication through pheromones and unique mating strategies. Although they can produce a neurotoxic venom, it poses no threat to humans. Garter snakes give birth to live young and possess the remarkable ability to store sperm for extended periods.

Despite facing challenges like habitat loss and predation, garter snakes remain common in many regions. However, some subspecies, such as the San Francisco garter snake, are endangered. The genus Thamnophis encompasses various species and subspecies, each adapted to different environments within their range.
