Facts About Caesar
The Caesar is a beloved cocktail in Canada, celebrated for its distinctive blend of vodka, Caesar mix, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and clam broth. Typically served in a large glass rimmed with celery salt, it is garnished with a stalk of celery and a wedge of lime. This drink was first concocted in 1969 by Walter Chell at the Calgary Inn in Calgary, Alberta, as the signature drink for the inn's new Italian restaurant.
The Caesar quickly gained a following, becoming Calgary's most popular mixed drink within just five years. From there, it spread across Western Canada and eventually the entire country. Its rise in popularity also boosted sales of Clamato, a clam and tomato juice blend. According to Mott's Clamato, the Caesar is now the most popular mixed drink in Canada, with Canadians consuming an estimated 350 million Caesars each year.
Despite its Canadian fame, the Caesar hasn't achieved the same level of popularity outside the country. It remains relatively unknown in the United States and Europe, partly because people are often hesitant about the clam broth ingredient.
Over time, the Caesar has inspired many variations. Some substitutions include horseradish, gin, tequila, or rum in place of vodka. There are also non-alcoholic versions, like the "Virgin Caesar." While there is a standard recipe, many bartenders add their own spin, and bartending schools in Canada even teach different ways to mix the cocktail.
The Caesar's unique flavor combination, cultural significance in Canada, and versatility have made it a cherished drink both at home and abroad.
