Parque Italia, Valparaíso
Facts and practical information
Parque Italia is a green area located in the El Almendral neighborhood of the city of Valparaíso, in the center of the recently named "Little Italy" sector.
It is named after the Italian colony residing in the city, establishing in the 1930s the statue of Romulus and Remus suckling the she-wolf Luperca, strengthening the ties between the city of Valparaiso and the European country.
The park is located adjacent to Pedro Montt and Independencia Avenues, two important roads that connect the city center with the neighborhoods and hills located to the east and south. At the end of the early 1970s, the park served as a social gathering point, as the candidates in the 1970 presidential elections concentrated a huge crowd on the stage located in the northeast corner.
After the return of democracy, Parque Italia became a social gathering point for students from nearby schools and high schools and was the focus of clashes between protesters and Carabineros during protests in 2001, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2018 and 2019. The park has served as a social point of commemoration of different milestones such as the triumph of sporting events of the local or national football team, the death of Fidel Castro or the triumph of the apruebo in the 2020 plebiscite.
