Nonguén National Reserve, Concepción
Facts and practical information
Nonguén National Park, which covers 3055 hectares and is mostly located in the commune of Chiguayante, was created on December 30, 2009, being the fifth reserve in the Biobío region, and on May 8, 2020 was recategorized as a national park, becoming the first of its kind existing in a peri-urban sector of Chile.
This park includes the most representative sample of the deciduous forest of Concepción, which covered the coastal mountain range of the Biobío region, and which was almost entirely replaced by agricultural crops and forestry plantations of pine and eucalyptus. The purpose of its conformation as a reserve is to allocate protection and funds for its care, maintenance and visits, among others. In this way, constant studies of its flora and fauna, conservation and recovery of soils and plantations will be carried out.
In addition to the above, there are programs for cultural recreational activities and for visitors to get to know the area. In this way, the park has trails to be visited without destroying or varying in any way their properties, spaces for delivery of information on what is observed and on the routes to follow, and an information point that has information leaflets that are given to visitors and guides willing to accompany or guide when required.
