Japonés Jardin del Corazón Park, La Serena
Facts and practical information
Parque Jardín del Corazón, also known as Parque Japonés de La Serena, is a park located in the Chilean city of La Serena that was inaugurated in 1994. Its theme is set in Japan and has various plant and animal species from that country. Built on an area of 26 thousand square meters, it is the largest Japanese park in South America. It is a Karesansui contemplation park with a mountain and water landscape.
It was officially inaugurated on August 26, 1994, as part of the celebrations for the 450th anniversary of the founding of La Serena. The project was developed thanks to the contribution of several mining companies from Chile and Japan, mainly Compañía Minera del Pacífico and Nippon Steel Corporation. With the construction of the park a typical Japanese landscape is represented, as part of the brotherhood agreement that the commune of La Serena signed with the town of Tenri in 1966.
