Josefov, Prague

This area, steeped in history and tragedy, now serves as a poignant museum complex dedicated to preserving the memory of Jewish heritage in Prague.

Josefov's origins date back to the 13th century when Jewish people were ordered to vacate their homes and settle in this designated area. Over the centuries, despite the many hardships and restrictions faced, the Jewish community flourished, contributing significantly to the cultural and economic life of Prague.

Today, visitors to Josefov can explore a collection of significant sites that form the Jewish Museum in Prague. Among these are six synagogues, including the Old-New Synagogue, Europe's oldest active synagogue, and the Spanish Synagogue, known for its stunning Moorish interior. The museum also encompasses the Jewish Ceremonial Hall and the Old Jewish Cemetery, one of the oldest surviving Jewish burial grounds in the world.

The artifacts and exhibitions within these historical buildings provide a deep insight into the Jewish traditions, customs, and the community's daily life. However, it is the Pinkas Synagogue that delivers the most heart-wrenching experience, as its walls are inscribed with the names of over 77,000 Czech and Moravian Jewish victims of the Holocaust.
