Old New Synagogue, Prague

The Old New Synagogue, also known as Altneuschul, holds a special place in the heart of Prague's Jewish Quarter, known as Josefov. As the oldest active synagogue in Europe, it is not only a significant religious site for the Jewish community but also a testament to the rich history of Prague. This Gothic structure, with its double-nave layout and distinctive steep roof, has been a place of worship since the 13th century.

The synagogue's name, "Old New," may seem contradictory, but it has a simple explanation. Originally called the "New" or "Great" Synagogue to distinguish it from older buildings, it became "old" with the construction of newer synagogues. However, legend also suggests that stones from the Temple in Jerusalem were brought by angels and used in its construction, hence the name "New."

Steeped in myth and legend, one of the most famous stories associated with the Old New Synagogue is that of the Golem, a creature created by Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel, also known as the Maharal, to protect the Jewish community from persecution. The attic of the synagogue, where the remains of the Golem are rumored to be kept, adds an air of mystery to this already fascinating site.

The synagogue continues to be an active house of worship and is the main synagogue of the Prague Jewish community. It has survived numerous challenges through the centuries, including pogroms, Nazi occupation, and communist-era repression, standing as a resilient symbol of the endurance of Jewish culture in Prague.

Visitors to the Old New Synagogue can marvel at the ancient artifacts housed within, including the Torah scrolls and beautiful textile coverings. The interior remains largely unchanged from medieval times, offering a unique glimpse into the past.
