Jihlavské podzemí, Jihlava
Facts and practical information
The system of underground corridors in the needle, called Igławski catacombs, with an area of 50,000 m² and length approx. 25 km. It is the second largest underground system in the Czech Republic, after the underground in Znojm. The undergrounds are located near the entire city and under most monuments in the city. This historical and technical peculiarity is one of the last residues of medieval miners in the needle, because most of the old silver mines in the city area have disappeared.
The underground in the needle began to arise already when building the city, first as basements, which were later enlarged and deepened. Historians have long thought that the catacombs were created thanks to the extraction of silver, but geological research overthrew this theory. The army was then considered, but this theory was not proven. Most likely, the underground was built for economic reasons: in the fourteenth century economic development was the cause of the demand for new rooms for storage or production, and because there was a lack of space on the surface, the townspeople noticed their attention to the underground. In the fourteenth to the 16th century, miners smooth three floors in Gneiss and granite rocks - digging with the tools at that time took a long and arduous tools.
Later, the owners also used the underground to hide valuables, or to build a sewage system and water supply installation. During the Second World War, the corridors probably used the Gestapo as an anti -aircraft shelter. In the 1960s, the corridors began to settle extensively, which led to concreting almost the entire underground surface, and thus to seriously destroy the historical value of the complex. During these works, the underground was examined. The city forged collectors, but due to the lack of money and a more accurate concept, they remain unused.
The undergrounds were first made available to the tour in 1936, during the Second World War, fascists closed them for security reasons, in 1949–1969 tourists returned to the underground, then the city closed them again due to construction works. The corridors were provided only in 1990 by the Georgia Agricola Association, which he still looks after them today.
