Facts and practical information
Water Fortress in Jesionik - a Gothic Water Fortress located on Zámecké Náměstí in Jesionik, in the Czech Republic, rebuilt into the castle in the 18th century.
It was founded as a tower building in the mid -13th century, when the housing estates were created and a city was created. Initially, it was owned by the nobility, later in Wrocław bishops, who eventually purchased the property in 1547. It remained the only fortification in the Jesionik, because the city did not obtain the right to build defensive walls. At the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, the tower was demolished, during the Thirty Years' War, the fortress was unsuccessfully besieged by the Swedes and in 1727 it was digested by a fire. Thanks to Bishop Franciszek Ludwik, after 1730 he was rebuilt in its current form. At the end of the 18th century, Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf worked here.
The fortress remained in the hands of the Archdiocese of Wrocław until the end of World War II, when it became a temporary magazine of the war confiscation, then the poviat museum. From 1958, the building has been protected as a cultural monument. In the years 1970-1982 the fortress underwent a thorough renovation. It currently houses the Museum of the History of the Jesenic Land.
