Černá studnice
Facts and practical information
Černá Studnice with its 869.1 m above sea level is the highest peak of the Černostudnice ridge of the Jizera Mountains. This mountain on the watershed of the Baltic and North Seas is a dominant feature of the landscape around Jablonec nad Nisou, from which it is less than 5 km southeast. It is also a tourist destination, since 1905 there has been a tourist hut and a lookout tower on its top, which belongs to the town of Smržovka.
Below the mountain lies a pair of villages with names derived from the mountain: the Upper Černá Studnice belongs to the municipality of Nová Ves nad Nisou, the Lower Černá Studnice to Pěnčín. Near the top, on the road from Horní Černá Studnice, there is Veselý's Cross, commemorating the suicide of Václav Veselý from Nová Ves. He shot himself in the local forest on 3 July 1969, allegedly out of unhappy love. In the surroundings of the lookout tower there are granite boulders and rocks scattered around the ridge. Some formations are also used for climbing activities.
