Šumburk
Facts and practical information
Šumburk is a castle ruin in the cadastral area of Klášterec nad Ohří in the Chomutov district. It is located about three kilometres west of the town on the top of the hill of the same name at an altitude of about 540 metres. The Gothic castle was founded in the first half of the fifteenth century by the Lords of Šumburk. Later on, the lords of Illburg and Fictum, among others, took over its possession. In the second half of the sixteenth century, however, it was not occupied by its owners and the dilapidated castle was not repaired after a great fire. The castle also included a farmstead, near which the extinct settlement of Šumná gradually grew. Since 1963 the ruins of the castle have been protected as a cultural monument.
