sv. Jakub, Telč
Facts and practical information
The Church of Saint James the Elder is a Roman Catholic church in the town of Telč in the Jihlava district. It is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
The first mention of the parish church in Telč dates back to 1372, and the year 1386 was commemorated by a fire which, among other things, destroyed the parish church. In the first half of the 15th century, the disrepair of the church is mentioned, which was probably repaired in the 1540s and 50s. At that time it was rebuilt in its present two-aisle Gothic form with a 50-metre high prismatic tower adjoining the north side of the chancel. Early Baroque additions were built in the 17th century, and the covered passage of the Stations of the Cross between the church and the neighbouring castle dates from 1737. At the end of the 19th century, purist modifications were made to the church, demolishing most of the 17th-century additions and adding a neo-Gothic altar. Due to the lean of the tower and cracks in the masonry, it was closed between 1961 and 1988, during which time it was structurally secured.
The cemetery was located around the church until the 1770s.
It is the parish church of the Telč parish.
