Assistenskirkegårdens Kapel, Odense
Facts and practical information
Assistens Kirkegård is a cemetery in Odense between the roads to Middelfart, Assens and Faaborg. It was established in 1811.
It had previously been the site of the town's execution and the rookery. The enclosed area, shaped like an irregular rectangle, was divided into nine quarters, fenced by pyramidal lime trees. Outside was a belt of more irregular planting along a winding double corridor, influenced by the Romantic garden style of the time and intended for larger family burials. The plans for the cemetery had been drawn up by the royal. Hans Müller, who was himself laid to rest here in 1816.
