The church is the largest and most impressive of the old village churches in Frederikshavn Municipality. It is dedicated to Saint Nicholas.
In the church you can see the remains of frescoes from the 16th century and a granite baptismal font believed to date from the 13th century.
Åsted parish differs from the other parishes in the municipality in that the farms are located in villages.
