The original small red brick church from the 13th century was replaced by the present church in the 15th-15th centuries. The present stilt tower was built in the mid 1700s. The church is 35 metres long with seven cross vaults and is built in Gothic style. Because of its size, the church is sometimes called Djurslands Domkirke.
In the Middle Ages, Dråby was probably a harbour town on the Kattegat and was situated on the draw towards Ebeltoft Vig, and the church is dedicated to the seafarers' saint Saint Nicholas. The church was formerly attached to the Skærsø estate, which was owned by the Rosenkrantz noble family and later the Gøje family. The coats of arms of both families are painted in the church.
In 1967-71 Dråby church was restored and the old Dråby school building was acquired to provide a chapel and other necessary rooms in connection with the church.
