Medieval Market of Turku

The Medieval Market of Turku is an enchanting annual event that transforms the historic city center of Turku, Finland, into a bustling medieval fair. Since its inception in 1996, this historical reenactment has significantly grown in popularity. In 2005 alone, it attracted approximately 100,000 visitors and featured over 100 actors, both professional and voluntary.

What sets this market apart is its comprehensive medieval experience. Participants can enjoy living history performances, an open-air handicrafts market, and numerous visitors dressed in authentic period costumes. The main activities take place at the Old Great Square, but there are also captivating performances and exhibitions at Turku Castle, Turku Cathedral, and the Aboa Vetus & Ars Nova Museum.

The event is a collaborative effort, organized by several groups, including Turun Suurtorin keskiaika ry and the Museum Centre of Turku. Over the years, the Medieval Market has continued to expand, with attendance reaching an impressive 180,000 visitors, making it one of Finland’s premier summertime attractions.

Previously, the Aboa Vetus & Ars Nova Museum organized the Town Market of the Hanseatic merchant "Laurentius." Now, the museum focuses on bringing medieval times to life through guided tours, lectures, and archaeological digs.

During the event, designated areas become pedestrian zones, free from traffic, and best of all, admission is completely free. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or just looking for an enjoyable outing, the Medieval Market of Turku offers a unique and immersive experience that should not be missed!
