Centre Mondial de la Paix, Verdun
Facts and practical information
The World Center for Peace, Freedom and Human Rights is a place of exhibition, meeting and reflection for the promotion of peace, freedom and human rights. Created in 1990, it is located since 1994 in the former episcopal palace of Verdun, in the Meuse department, in the Grand Est region.
The episcopal palace was built in the 18th century as a prestigious residence for the bishops of Verdun. Acquired by the municipality in 1906 after the separation of the Churches and the State, the building was severely damaged during the 1916 battle of Verdun. After a major restoration campaign, the bishop was able to return to the building in 1935. He left the palace for good in 1993 to allow the World Peace Center to move in the following year.
The center hosts temporary exhibitions of varying duration, conferences, symposiums and concerts. A wing of the Bishop's Palace also houses the municipal library.
