Facts and practical information
The monolithic church of Aubeterre is a former parish church dedicated to Saint-Sauveur and then to Saint-Jean located in Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, in the department of Charente and the diocese of Angoulême. Carved in a cliff overhanging the village from the VIII th century, it is enlarged in the XII th century by a community of Benedictine monks.
Among the most important monolithic churches in France, it has been classified as a historical monument since September 3, 1912. The term troglodyte church, or underground, would be more accurate.
