Facts and practical information
The Saint-Elme citadel located in Villefranche-sur-Mer is a historical monument that is part of a larger military architectural complex that includes the Fort du Mont Alban, the Saint-Hospice tower in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and the battery in Beaulieu-sur-Mer. This device constituted a defensive ensemble around the royal port of La Darse, the military port of the States of Savoy.
Built in the 16th century, the Villefranche citadel is one of the first examples of bastioned fortifications in Europe.
