Église Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Prothais, Bresles
Facts and practical information
The Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Prothais church is a Catholic parish church located in Bresles, Oise, France.
Its 11th century nave is one of the oldest in Beauvaisis, and is built with small cubic stones recovered from destroyed Gallo-Roman buildings. On the gable of the facade, a crucifix in bas-relief stands out. All the original bays and doors have been blocked up, and neo-gothic windows were added around 1840. The interior is now characterized by a dilapidated neo-Gothic decoration. The eastern parts of the mid-sixteenth century contrast nicely with this nave. They are of a late flamboyant gothic style, which already incorporates Renaissance motifs on the lanterns and keystones. But the beautiful effect of the whole comes especially from the carefully molded double arches and the complex ribbed vaults with liernes and tiercerons. Particularly remarkable is the plan, which includes a central nave of three straight bays finished by a canted apse, and two side aisles. Double on either side of the first bay, they then become simple by the expansion of the central vessel. This plan is partly due to the positioning of the old Romanesque bell tower above the first bay of the central nave. Its collapse on the nave, on Easter day in 1581, killed thirty-seven people, including the priest. The bell tower was rebuilt on the same site, but replaced in 1853 by a neo-Romanesque bell tower-porch to the north.
The Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Prothais church is also interesting for its very complete furniture. It was classified as a historical monument by decree of October 13, 1988 and is now the center of the parish of Saint-Louis, which includes fourteen communes and fifteen places of worship. Sunday masses are celebrated in the Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Prothais church every Sunday and holiday at 10:30 am.
