Grotte de l'Hortus
Facts and practical information
The mountain of Hortus, in Latin "the garden", is located in the commune of Valflaunès, about 20 km north of Montpellier, close to the peak Saint-Loup which it faces. It is constituted by the fracture of the plateau of Pompignan.
Its impressive and very aesthetic cliff of white limestone, more than one hundred meters high and more than one kilometer wide, is visible from the whole region of Montpellier. It is home to several pairs of birds of prey. With its neighbor, the Saint-Loup peak, the Hortus is one of the main destinations for Montpellier inhabitants.
The Hortus mountain is the southern edge of a small causse encompassing the following communes: Rouet, Claret and Notre-Dame-de-Londres.
