Facts About Red-eyed dove
The Red-eyed Dove is a distinctive presence in Sub-Saharan Africa, renowned for its characteristic red eyes and robust build. This species, classified as Least Concern by the IUCN since 2004, was first described by the German naturalist Eduard Rüppell in 1835.
These doves are relatively large pigeons, readily identifiable by their dark vinous-pink underparts and the distinctive black patch on the back of their necks. While adults display these striking features, juveniles are usually duller in coloration.
Red-eyed Doves have a diverse diet, primarily consisting of grass seeds, grains, and various vegetation. They typically forage on the ground, often alone or in pairs, rather than in large flocks.
These doves are widespread across most of Sub-Saharan Africa, with the exception of desert regions. They are adaptable to a range of habitats, including forests near rivers. For nesting, females lay two white eggs in nests constructed of sticks, usually situated in trees.
