Speckled mousebird

The speckled mousebird is the largest member of the mousebird family and can be found throughout eastern and southern Africa. Measuring around 35 cm in length, this bird features a subdued, mousy-brown plumage and a distinctive crest on its head. It is notably vocal, known for its noisy calls, including a melodic "tsu-tsu" and a sharp "tisk-tisk" alarm call.

These birds thrive in open bushveld environments such as savannas and woodlands but can also be found in urban areas, especially where gardens and orchards are present.

Speckled mousebirds are frugivores, primarily consuming fruits, berries, leaves, seeds, and nectar. They are highly social creatures, often seen feeding together, grooming each other, and huddling closely at night to roost. They can breed throughout the year, constructing nests from various materials. Clutch sizes range from one to seven eggs, with both parents, along with helpers, caring for the young until they are capable of foraging independently.
