Roman Odeon of Kos, Kos
Facts and practical information
The Roman Conservatory is considered one of the most important public buildings of ancient Kos. He was found by the Italian archaeologist Laurenzi in an excavation held in 1929.
It was built in the 2nd century. A.D. And it is believed to have occupied the post of an earlier public building which may have been the city's Boulege.
Although the Conservatory was built for the event, it was also used as a Senate headquarters, which gave honors to distinguished citizens of the island.
The building was initially covered and its capacity is estimated at about 750 people. Its hollow, oriented to the north, was based on vaulted structures, which brought built -in -masonry pillars. It had fourteen rows of marble seats, of which the nine were restored, and was divided by a corridor into two diaphragms, of which the lower divisions were divided into four -scale stands. Underneath the hollow were two semicircular galleries and a series of rooms that served either as shops or as workshops. The scene had the unusual form of irregular pentagon and consisted of two parts, the foreground and the background, which communicated with each other with three entrances. On the two sides of the scene there were two more doors leading to the lanes. The orchestra was circular and its floor was decorated with marble. Two more mosaic floors adorned the lanes. Around 18 marble statues were found hidden, most important of which are Hippocrates who is currently on display at the Archaeological Museum of Kos.
Today the Conservatory hosts a variety of cultural events, mainly during the summer months. Also inside the Conservatory is hosted a photography exhibition of the Archaeological Institute of Aegean Studies, funded by the 3rd CPS.
