Szurdok, Pilisszentkereszt
Facts and practical information
The gorge is an east-west oriented valley on the outskirts of Pilisszentkereszt, also called the Dera Creek Gorge. Its length is about 600 metres. The gorge valley is located next to the fault line separating the limestone rocks of the Pilis and the volcanic rocks of the Visegrád Mountains, and was deepened by the stream.
The sides of the valley are very steep, and the climate is cool even in the hottest of times. The geological value of the gorge lies in the fact that its sides show the Triassic limestone formations of the Dachstein and the movement of rock strata during the Triassic period of the Earth's history. In some parts, remains of Megalodus shells can be seen. A small cave system has also developed beneath the base of the gorge and a characteristic plant community, the gorge forest, has developed within it. The steep, narrow bottom of the gorge is poorly exposed to sunlight and therefore the air is humid, where nitrogen-favouring species have also appeared. The trees in the gorges are beech, hornbeam, maple, mountain elm and, in rare cases, wild cherry and black elder. In addition to these, the gorge forest is also home to the bramble, big nettle, wood sorrel and lady fern.
The Szurdok is managed by the Pilisszentkereszti Forestry, and the National Blue Trail passes through it. The gorge is located right next to the settlement, with a parking lot and a fireplace at the other end. The tourist path leads through small wooden bridges, along which the Pilisszentkereszti municipality has set up an educational trail. In the gorge there is the gorge valley waterhole, the gorge valley waterhole No. 2 and the gorge valley upper cave.
