Shaniwar Wada, Pune

Shaniwar Wada, a historic palace located in the heart of Pune, India, stands as a testament to the grandeur of the Maratha Empire. Constructed in 1732, it was the seat of the Peshwas, the prime ministers of the Maratha Empire, and it symbolized the culture and politics of the era. This majestic palace was built by Peshwa Baji Rao I, and its name 'Shaniwar' is derived from the Marathi word for Saturday, the day of its foundation, while 'Wada' means a general term for any residence.

The architecture of Shaniwar Wada is a rich blend of Maratha heritage and Mughal design, reflecting the prominence of both styles during that time. The palace originally featured beautiful gardens, fountains, and halls, designed to reflect the opulence of its inhabitants. The complex included impressive gateways, such as the Delhi Darwaza, which was large enough to admit elephants bearing royalty.

Tragically, much of the palace was destroyed in an unexplained fire in 1828, leaving behind only the stone base, fortification walls, and gates. Nevertheless, these remnants still offer a glimpse into the past, with visitors being able to walk through the surviving structures, which are adorned with detailed carvings and motifs.
