Nestled amidst the stark beauty of the Ladakh region in Northern India, the Lamayuru Monastery stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Tibetan Buddhism. Situated at a breathtaking altitude of approximately 3,510 meters, this ancient monastery, also known as Yungdrung or Tharpa Ling which means the 'place of freedom'; is believed to have been established in the 11th century. It is one of the oldest and most significant monasteries in the region.
The Lamayuru Monastery is renowned for its stunning location, perched on a hill and surrounded by the dramatic moonscape of Lamayuru, which draws visitors and photographers from around the globe. This area is often referred to as the 'Moonland' due to its unique lunar terrain, and the monastery itself provides a serene vantage point from which to take in the otherworldly surroundings.

This two-day religious event attracts a large number of tourists and locals alike, who come to witness the spectacular display of sacred dances performed by the monks in vibrant costumes and masks. The festival, which takes place in the second month of the Tibetan lunar calendar, is a profound spiritual experience that encapsulates the essence of Ladakhi culture.
