Nestled in the heart of Rajasthan, India, the Keoladeo Bird Sanctuary, formerly known as Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, is a veritable paradise for avian enthusiasts and a marvel of biodiversity. Spanning approximately 29 square kilometers, this national park is a mosaic of dry grasslands, woodlands, wetlands, and water bodies, creating a habitat that supports an astonishing variety of birds.
Declared a national park in 1982 and later inscribed on the list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, Keoladeo is renowned for hosting thousands of birds, especially during the winter migration season. Over 350 species of birds have been recorded in the park, making it one of the most prolific birding destinations in the world.
The sanctuary's most famous avian visitor, the Siberian Crane, used to winter here, although it has not been sighted in recent years. However, the park is still home to a wide array of other species, including the rare Saras Crane, the Indian Courser, and the Imperial Eagle. The wetlands are teeming with waterfowl, such as ducks, geese, pelicans, and flamingos, which form spectacular colonies that are a sight to behold.
In addition to birds, Keoladeo shelters a variety of other wildlife, including mammals like the Sambar, Chital, Nilgai, and the elusive Fishing Cat. It is also a haven for flora, with an abundance of aquatic vegetation that plays a crucial role in maintaining the park's ecosystem.
Visitors to the sanctuary can explore the grounds on foot, by bicycle, or on rickshaws, which are operated by knowledgeable local guides. The best time to visit Keoladeo is from October to February when the migratory birds are present in full force. The park also offers a range of accommodation options for those wishing to immerse themselves in nature.
