Kusum Sarovar

Kusum Sarovar, a serene and historic reservoir, is a poignant memorial located in Govardhan, Mathura district, in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. This picturesque sandstone monument, standing on the sacred Govardhan Hill, spans a length of 450 feet and reaches depths of up to 60 feet, making it a significant landmark in the region.

Built around the 16th and 17th centuries, Kusum Sarovar is not just a reservoir but also a memorial ground that includes cenotaphs dedicated to the members of the royal family of Bharatpur. The site is named after the pastime of Radha (a deity revered in Hinduism) and her Gopis (companions) who were said to pick flowers and meet Krishna here. The architectural finesse of the cenotaphs, with intricate carvings and paintings depicting various pastimes of Radha and Krishna, provides a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the area.
