Punnathurkotta
Facts and practical information
Punnathurkotta, located in the state of Kerala in India, is not an aquarium in the traditional sense of the word. The tag "aquarium" might be misleading, as Punnathurkotta is primarily known as a home for elephants. It is the largest elephant sanctuary in India, where these majestic animals are protected and cared for.
Punnathurkotta, often called "Anathavalam" by the locals, was originally a palace that has been transformed into a refuge for elephants belonging to the Guruvayoor temple. The area covers about 10 hectares and is home to over 50 elephants, which have been offered to the temple by devotees as fulfillment of their religious vows.
This sanctuary is not only a place of care for these wonderful creatures but also a training center. Elephants are trained here to participate in various rituals and parades that play an important role in the cultural landscape of Kerala. A visit to Punnathurkotta offers a unique opportunity to observe elephants up close and learn about their daily lives and training.
