Crocodile Bank
Facts and practical information
The Crocodile Bank in India, located near Chennai in the state of Tamil Nadu, is a fascinating conservation park and research institute that plays a crucial role in the study and preservation of reptiles, particularly crocodiles. Established in 1976 by herpetologist Romulus Whitaker, the center is sprawled across 3.2 hectares and is home to over 2,000 crocodiles and alligators from 14 different species.
This facility serves not only as a tourist attraction but also as a hub for herpetology research and environmental education. The Crocodile Bank's primary focus is on breeding endangered species of crocodiles, such as the Marsh crocodile and the Saltwater crocodile, in captivity and subsequently reintroducing them into the wild to bolster their dwindling populations.
Visitors to the Crocodile Bank can witness the majestic creatures in their naturalistic habitats and learn about their behavior, diet, and conservation status. The park also features a snake farm where anti-venom is produced, contributing significantly to snakebite treatment in India.
