Nestled high in the Indian Himalayas at an altitude of over 5,000 meters, Roopkund is a glacial lake renowned for its mysterious past and the enigmatic remains that lie at its bottom. Known colloquially as the 'Skeleton Lake', Roopkund is shrouded in legend and has piqued the interest of historians, scientists, and trekkers alike.
The lake is situated in the state of Uttarakhand and is surrounded by rock-strewn glaciers and snow-clad mountains, making it a sight of stark, haunting beauty. It is most famous for the hundreds of ancient human skeletons found there, which are visible in the clear water of the shallow lake when the ice melts. Research suggests that these bones date back to around 850 AD and belong to a group of people who perished in a sudden, violent hailstorm.
The journey to Roopkund is a challenging trek, attracting adventurers who are drawn not only to the mystery of the lake's past but also to the natural splendor of the region. The trek route passes through lush forests and alpine meadows dotted with a variety of flora and fauna, offering breathtaking views of the Trishul and Nanda Ghunti peaks.
