Facts and practical information
Arulmigu Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple, commonly known as Palani Murugan Temple, is an ancient and significant site of worship located in the city of Palani, in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. This revered Hindu temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan, the son of Shiva and Parvati, and is considered one of the six abodes (Arupadai Veedu) of Murugan, making it a major pilgrimage destination.
Perched atop a hill, the temple can be accessed by a steep flight of 657 steps, which pilgrims often climb as an act of devotion, although a winch and rope-car service are available for those who prefer a less strenuous ascent. The architecture of the temple is a testament to the Dravidian style, with intricate carvings and towering gopurams (gateway towers) that dominate the skyline.
The temple's main deity, Lord Murugan, is depicted holding a staff (danda) in his hand (yudha), hence the name Dhandayuthapani. The idol is unique as it is made of an amalgamation of nine minerals, called Navabashana. The shrine is also renowned for its therapeutic Panchamirtham, a holy prasadam made of five ingredients, which is believed to have medicinal properties.
Devotees flock to the temple during the Thai Poosam and Panguni Uthiram festivals when the temple buzzes with fervent activity, vibrant processions, and cultural performances. Throughout the year, the temple's serene atmosphere offers solace to visitors seeking spiritual enrichment.
The temple complex also houses several other shrines and mandapams, each with its own historical and religious significance. The view from the hill offers a panoramic vista of the surrounding town and the lush greenery, making it a picturesque spot for photography.
