Sanitary Garden, Chandigarh
Facts and practical information
The Rock Garden, located in the heart of the city of Chandigarh in India, is one of the most extraordinary tourist attractions in the country. Although it may sound somewhat ordinary, this public space is anything but an ordinary garden.
The garden was designed by Dr. Nek Chand Saini, a building inspector from Chandigarh, who in 1957 began creating this remarkable space from waste and scrap. His inspiration for the project was the vision of creating a green oasis that, at the same time, promotes recycling and raises environmental awareness.
Situated on an area of over 40 acres, the Rock Garden in Chandigarh is full of sculptures and walls created from reclaimed materials, such as porcelain, broken glass, tiles, industrial and domestic waste. This creative use of waste draws attention not only for its aesthetics but also as a social commentary on consumerism and the human impact on the environment.
This ecological wonder was officially opened to the public in 1976 and since then has attracted throngs of tourists and art enthusiasts. The garden is divided into several sectors, including an open-air theater, a waterfall, and several interactive installations that provide visitors with not only contemplation but also fun.
In addition to the artistic aspect, the Rock Garden also serves an educational purpose, pointing out the possibilities of reusing waste and encouraging thinking about sustainable development. It is a place that lives in harmony with nature, while at the same time serving as a reminder of the necessity to care for the environment.
