Facts About Papilio sataspes
Papilio sataspes is a captivating species of swallowtail butterfly found in Sulawesi and Banggai. This butterfly belongs to the genus Papilio. There are two primary subspecies: Papilio sataspes sataspes, native to Sulawesi, and Papilio sataspes artaphernes, described by Honrath in 1886, which originates from Banggai Island.
In terms of its phylogenetic classification, Papilio sataspes is part of the helenus species group. This group also includes other butterflies such as Papilio helenus, described by Linnaeus in 1758; Papilio iswara, identified by White in 1842; Papilio iswaroides, named by Fruhstorfer in 1898; Papilio nephelus, described by Boisduval in 1836; and Papilio nubilus, recognized by Staudinger in 1895. The species Papilio sataspes itself was described by C. & R. Felder in 1865.
