Indonesia Travel Weather
When Is the Best Time To Visit Indonesia?
The answer to the question of what is the best month to visit Indonesia depends on what you are interested in doing during your stay. Here you can see an overview of each month and its typical weather conditions.
Tourist Season in Indonesia
The best time to visit Indonesia is during the dry season months from June to September. Most areas then experience sunny and relatively rain-free weather, ideal for beachcombing and enjoying the sea.
April and May (the first months of the dry season) and October (the month heralding the beginning of the rainy season) are wetter and rainier, but can still be a good choice when planning a visit.
The period from November to early April is the rainy season, and in addition to the not-so-friendly weather in some areas, you may encounter transportation problems (such as difficulties with boat and air travel between islands).
Indonesia is a vast country, and thus the weather and timing of the tourist season in different areas vary a bit. For a more elaborate description of these differences between Java, Sulawesi, Kalimantan, Sumatra, Bali and Nusa Tenggara (Lombok, Flores, Komodo, Sumba), see the "Monthly breakdown" section.

Season and weather by month
January
Jan |
Java → One of the rainiest months of the year. Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms can be expected, especially on the northeast coast, which is additionally prone to flooding. Temperatures are around 27°C during the day and 22°C at night. Rainy weather is not conducive to climbing Bromo and Ijen volcanoes. Roads can be slippery and muddy and thus partially inaccessible.
Sulawesi → The weather is warm and humid with an average temperature of about 26°C. Rain and thunderstorms can be expected, especially in the southern regions and on the southwest coast. Diving conditions are not the best in Manado Bay, mainly due to rough water and poor visibility.
Kalimantan → Here it is also rainy. Precipitation comes in the form of brief but intense downpours. Days are often overcast and the average temperature is around 27°C.
Sumatra → The rainy season is underway, however, the northern part of Sumatra (Medan area) is slightly more serene than the south of the island, where rainfall is more intense. With heavily overcast skies, temperatures are hovering around 26°C, and humidity rises to over 80%.
Bali → One of the rainiest months of the year, during which intense downpours occur on sunny warm days. Temperatures generally do not drop below 25°C. The exception is the area around Kintamani and the Batur volcano, where the air is fresher and cooler.
Nusa Tenggara (Lombok, Flores, Komodo National Park, Sumba) → There is heavy rainfall and the temperature reaches 28°C, the humidity rises and it becomes steamy. The rough seas are not safe for divers off the coast of Lombok and in Komodo National Park. Occurring storms can cause significant difficulties for boat and ferry trips.
