Corteo Storico

The Corteo Storico is a vibrant historical costume parade held in Siena, Tuscany, Italy, just before the renowned Palio horse race. This spectacular event takes place twice a year, on July 2 and August 16, and celebrates the rich history and traditions of the Republic of Siena.

Picture nearly seven hundred participants, all adorned in exquisite period costumes, marching through the streets of Siena. The parade is a meticulously choreographed celebration that revives the ancient customs and institutions of the city. Central to this grand event are the Contrade, or city wards, which play a vital role in the festivities.

The procession begins in the courtyard of the Palace of Justice, where townsfolk gather and line up under the command of the field marshal. As they proceed through the streets, they eventually reach the iconic Piazza del Campo. Along the route, you'll encounter flag-bearers, musicians, standard-bearers, commanders, drummers, trumpeters, and representatives from various groups and Contrade, all contributing to the pageantry.

One of the parade's highlights is the Carroccio, a modern rendition of the Republic's ancient triumphal chariot. This chariot proudly carries the Palio banner, which is later hoisted onto the judges' stand in a grand finale. The parade also features an impressive array of groups, including Mazzieri (officials carrying ceremonial maces), horsemen, musicians, city insignia bearers, captains, pages, flag-bearers, guild representatives, and members of Siena's noble families.

The historical procession concludes with the Carroccio being pulled by oxen, accompanied by soldiers, trumpeters, and knights representing old noble families. This cultural event is more than just a parade; it's a living showcase of Siena's rich history and cherished traditions.
