Facts and practical information
Nemuro Kurumaseki is widely distributed in the area around Cape Hanasaki on the Nemuro Peninsula in Nemuro City, Hokkaido. It is a spherical rock body with well-developed radial joints in alkali-rich basaltic rocks, including pyrite. It is called "Kurumaseki" because of the radial fractures from the center, which resemble the shape of a wheel with spokes radiating out from the nave.
It became a national natural monument on September 7, 1939.
