Marine Park, Yokosuka
Facts and practical information
Umi no Koen is an urban park located in Kanazawa Ward, Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture. The facility is owned by Yokohama City and operated and managed by the Yokohama Green Association as the designated manager.
It was developed as part of the Kanazawa land reclamation project. This is the only beach park in Yokohama City that has a bathing beach. Sand from Futtsu City, Chiba Prefecture, which is located on the opposite shore, was transported to the beach and temporarily stored on the seabed for about five years. Soil from the Nomi-dai development was used for the reclamation of the park area. Andesite was used for the beach in front of Hakkeijima Station so that visitors can play on the rocky shore.
Tide-pooling is also available, with clams, mate clams, shioufki, and kagami mussels available. They naturally grow on artificial beaches, and no fees are charged. Therefore, fishing for clams for sale to vendors and restaurants has become a problem and is often featured on television.
