Rainbow Bridge, Tokyo
Facts and practical information
Spanning the waters of Tokyo Bay, the Rainbow Bridge is not only a key transportation link but also a striking feature of Tokyo's panoramic cityscape. This suspension bridge, connecting the Shibaura Pier and the Odaiba waterfront development in Minato, is an iconic sight that tourists often seek out for its picturesque views and unique construction.
Completed in 1993, the Rainbow Bridge stretches 798 meters in length and is illuminated by lights that employ solar energy—a nod to environmental consciousness. At night, the bridge is often lit up in a variety of colors, resembling a rainbow, which is how it earned its enchanting name. The illumination schedule can vary, sometimes featuring special color schemes for events or holidays, making every visit potentially unique.
The bridge supports two decks: the upper deck carries the Shuto Expressway's Route 11 Daiba Line, while the lower deck has roads for public vehicles, a walkway, and the Yurikamome automated transit system. For pedestrians and cyclists, the walkway offers a free and leisurely way to enjoy the stunning views of the Tokyo skyline, Tokyo Tower, and on clear days, even Mount Fuji.
Tourists should note that the walkway is only open from 10:00 to 18:00 in winter (from November to April) and from 09:00 to 21:00 in summer (from May to October), and it is closed on the third Monday of every month for maintenance. Additionally, there are two separate walkways on the north and south sides, with the north side offering views of the inner Tokyo harbor and the south side providing vistas of Tokyo Bay and the Pacific Ocean.
