Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral, Mexico City
Facts and practical information
The Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral stands as a monumental emblem of faith in the heart of Mexico City, Mexico. This magnificent church, the largest cathedral in the Americas, is a blend of architectural styles, predominantly Baroque and Neo-Classical, reflecting the diverse history of the country. Construction of the cathedral began in 1573 and extended over three centuries, finally reaching completion in 1813.
Situated on the northern side of the Zócalo, the city's main square, the cathedral occupies the site of a former Aztec sacred precinct, near the Templo Mayor. This location underscores the complex layers of Mexican history, from pre-Hispanic times through Spanish colonial rule.
The cathedral's grand facade is flanked by two imposing bell towers housing a total of 35 bells. Inside, visitors are greeted by a richly decorated interior, including five naves and 14 chapels each dedicated to a different saint. The sumptuous Altar of the Kings (Altar de los Reyes) is a standout piece, with its intricately carved figures and gold leaf applications.
The cathedral also boasts an impressive organ, used for religious ceremonies and concerts alike. Due to the soft soil and the fact that the city was built on a lake bed, the cathedral has experienced sinking over the years, leading to extensive restoration and stabilization efforts.
