Museum of Natural History, Maputo
Facts and practical information
The Natural History Museum of Maputo, Mozambique, was established in 1913. It was initially a Provincial Museum, occupying several locations before settling in 1932 in the current Neo-Manuelino building as the Dr. Álvaro de Castro Museum. The building, founded in 1911, was intended to be an elementary school, but ended up being given over to the curatorship of the Museum. It came to be called the Maputo Museum of Natural History after the country's independence. In 2013, it celebrated 100 years of existence.
It is currently tutored by the Eduardo Mondlane University.
CollectionThe institution has several collections of embalmed animals such as lions, giraffes, hippopotamuses, and rhinos, including one of elephant fetuses - from the first 22 months of gestation - from the time of the First World War, the only one in the world, as well as images, statues, musical instruments, and accessories from Mozambican tribes.
The external area of the Maputo Museum of Natural History has a garden with murals by the artist Malangatana and statues and didactic panels about dinosaurs.
One of the treasures of his collection is a specimen of the coelacanth, an animal that was believed extinct, but was found on the coast of South Africa in 1938.
